Tires and Date Codes??

When Should I Replace my Tires?

They are round and made of rubber, but did you know they have date
codes? Just like food can expire, tires can be past their useful life.
It’s your lucky day! Grandma Betty decides to pass down her 1984
Oldsmobile Cutlass to you. You get it and the tires have solid tread and look good.
Grandma drove the car down Route 3 at 30mph and never had a problem, why
would you? You get on I95 and hit 65mph and have a blowout! Why? Those tires
with a “solid tread and look good” are 20 years old and the rubber has
turned into dry plastic over that time.
When replacing tires, it doesn’t matter if you drive a Porsche 911, a Dodge
Minivan, or how few miles are on the tires. We recommend replacing those tires
on or before they are eight years old. Your tires are trash by ten years!

You might be asking yourself the following question: “How do I find out how
old my tires are?” Good question, on the side of the tire there will be 4 numbers in
an oval, the first two are the week of the year they were made, and the second two are
the year they were made. (Check out the photo above for the following example: the
number 4708 would be the 47th week of 2008.)
Always remember that tires are your connection with the road. If you must
panic stop or swerve to avoid a car, the tires are the number one factor on
whether you make it safely or an airbag deploys! At Leading Edge Autosport in
West Chester, we can help you choose the right tire for your car and your
budget. We price match Tire Rack so you know you are getting a good deal! Give
us a call for your tire quote today!!! Don’t ruin Grandma Betty’s Oldsmobile!

We are a Michelin, BFGoodrich, and Uniroyal authorized install shop.

Saving Money at the Pump

Saving $$$$ at the pump

The price of fuel is rising daily and no one knows when it will stop or come back down in price. How
can you cut down your family’s fuel bill and make every gallon count? No, I am not saying everyone
should run out and buy an electric vehicle, but instead, let’s talk about what can be done to your current
vehicle to have it running in tip-top shape.

Let’s start with the basics, which are the normal maintenance items that can be easily forgotten about: the
engine air filters, spark plugs, and tune-up items. Having these items replaced can drastically help how
your engine runs, which in return, will get you better fuel economy. Fluids, from engine oil, transmission
fluid, and differential fluid, are all important to have cleaned and replaced regularly to keep all of your
powertrains properly lubricated and moving.

Another very simple item is tire pressure. Make sure your tires are inflated to the correct pressure. You
can find this located on your driver’s door sill. Verify your transmission is shifting into “ALL” gears and verify
that your transmission is in good working order and is not making any sounds or clunks. If it is anything
other than smooth, it could be an area of concern. This is very important so that the engine won’t
overwork itself on the highway and around town, which would consume more fuel.

The next recommendation is geared toward direct-injected vehicles, which are most of the newer vehicles
today. Carbon buildup inside your engine from lack of fuel in the intake can cause multiple engine issues
and will hurt its fuel economy.

At Leading Edge Autosport, we offer walnut blasting. This procedure cleans the intake ports of the carbon
buildup to keep the engine running the best it can. Even if your vehicle is not directly injected, we do still
have some options that can help clean up the internals and get some of that MPGs back.

We always recommend filling up with top-tier fuel.  Give us a call to discuss your vehicle and how we can help save some money at the pump 610-431-8459.

The Importance of an Oil Change

The Importance of an Oil Change

By Mark Ranieri, Leading Edge Autosport

Getting an oil change – what’s the big deal, right? I hear it all the time: “I am only 1,000
miles past due on my oil change” or “it’s just a quart low.”
However, oil is the lifeblood of your engine. If your body loses some blood, would you
feel the same way? Would you say, “I only lost a pint of blood, no big deal”?

I believe that vehicle owner should look at the importance of oil and oil changes in a
different way. Many people view oil changes as costly maintenance items, but in reality,
an oil change is a low-cost insurance policy on your engine. Changing the oil at proper
intervals is going to keep your vehicle’s engine running longer, help keep it as efficient as
the day you bought it, and keep all the other moving parts in working order. The
average oil change is about $75, and the average car price is about $50,000. So,
changing the oil three times a year will cost $225. That’s a pretty low price tag to keep that $50,000 vehicle on the road and running the best it can.

At Leading Edge Autosport, we recommend changing your oil every 6,000 miles to keep the engine running at its optimal performance. Changing the oil also allows us to look over your vehicle and make sure there are no underlying issues.  Since we’ve opened our doors, there have been numerous occasions where a customer
comes in for an oil change and we find something that could have caused a serious
accident or fire: from damaged tires to worn suspension pieces to small fuel leaks.
Getting your oil changed at regular intervals will keep your engine running at top
condition and will also give us a chance to make sure that you and your family are safe
while driving down the road!
